Similar to the insert injection molding process, overmolding allows rubber, metal, or two or more different types of thermoplastic material to be incorporated into one piece. For example, in components where ergonomics are desired, one type of thermoplastic, designed for more structural strength, is tooled first. Soft rubberized components can then be overmolded onto the structural component. When the thermoplastic cools, the separate pieces have now been fused into one integral final component.
